Deacons Class

St. Stephen Deacons Class forms chanters in the spirituality, discipline, and hymns of Coptic Orthodox worship.

St. Stephen Deacons Class forms young chanters and deacons in the spirituality, discipline, and hymns of the Coptic Orthodox Church. The goal is not only to learn melodies, but to help the whole chorus serve the Divine Liturgy with reverence, understanding, and one voice.

What It Is

Deacons Class teaches the spirituality of being a deacon so that the deacon chorus can chant with unity, order, and reverence. Students learn the hymns of the Church while also learning how to serve in the altar and in the nave with humility and attention.

Who It Is For

The class is for chanters ages 6 and up, including boys and men who are beginning deacon service or continuing to grow in the hymns, responses, and discipline of liturgical participation.

When We Meet

Deacons Class meets on Saturdays from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, except on the first Saturday of the month. Families should confirm current dates through the church schedule and weekly announcements, especially around feasts, retreats, or parish events.

Formation Goals

  • Teach the hymns and responses of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
  • Help the deacon chorus chant with one voice and one spirit.
  • Form reverence, attentiveness, obedience, and humility in liturgical service.
  • Help students understand that deacon service is prayer, not performance.
  • Prepare students to serve during the Divine Liturgy, Vespers, feasts, fasts, and special church seasons.
  • Encourage steady practice at home using approved hymn resources.

What Students Learn

Students learn hymns, responses, church order, and the practical expectations of deacon service. The class supports both memorization and understanding, helping chanters know when hymns are used, why they matter, and how they fit into the worship of the Church.

AreaFocus
Hymns and ResponsesLearning the melodies, words, and seasonal responses used in worship.
Liturgical OrderUnderstanding where to stand, when to respond, and how to serve with the chorus.
Spirituality of ServiceLearning humility, reverence, attention, and prayerful participation.
Unity of the ChorusChanting together with one voice rather than as separate individuals.
Practice at HomeUsing hymn recordings and texts to review consistently between classes.

Practice Resource

Students are encouraged to use the Coptic Hymns in English app for practice outside class. The app provides a library of English Coptic hymns and is available for iPhone and Android.

Parent Partnership

Parents help students grow by bringing them consistently, encouraging home practice, helping them arrive on time, and reminding them that deacon service is a holy responsibility. Young chanters benefit most when class, home practice, and regular attendance at the Divine Liturgy work together.
