Orthodox Hymns Course

The Orthodox Hymns Course is an 8-week online course for anyone interested in learning the Coptic Orthodox hymns in English. No prior hymn knowledge is necessary. The course begins with introductory hymns heard during the standard and annual seasons, then helps students grow in confidence, accuracy, and understanding.

Course Format

No prior hymn knowledge is necessary.
The course is offered online as a live-streamed course.
Each class runs for 8 weeks.
Students test and advance their knowledge by completing the required quizzes and tests.
Students use Moodle for course access, materials, and course progress.

What You Will Study

The Orthodox Hymns Course helps students understand and chant the hymns of the Coptic Orthodox Church in English. Class materials include music notes for many hymns and video presentations that explain the material clearly.

Introductory hymns from the standard and annual seasons.
Basic music notes and how they support hymn learning.
The words, meaning, and spiritual purpose of each hymn.
How hymns fit into the Divine Liturgy and the worship of the Church.
How to practice outside class with consistency and reverence.

Learning Goals

God willing, after completing the course, students will feel more confident chanting hymns, following the structure of the services, and entering more deeply into the words being sung. Hymns are theology in prayer, and this course helps students sing with understanding.
