Sanctuary Service is a ministry for volunteer deacons who clean, maintain, and prepare the sanctuary on a weekly basis. It is a quiet service of reverence for the altar, the holy vessels, and the place where the Divine Liturgy is offered.
Serving the Sanctuary with Reverence
The sanctuary is the holiest area of the church and contains the altar where the Eucharist is offered. Caring for this space requires attention, humility, cleanliness, and obedience to the direction of the clergy and lead servants.
Sanctuary Service gives deacons a regular way to serve outside the visible chanting of the liturgy. It helps form the habit that deacon service includes preparation, care, and reverence before and after the prayers.
How Volunteers Serve
- Clean and maintain the sanctuary on a weekly basis.
- Help keep the altar area orderly, clean, and ready for services.
- Assist with appropriate setup and reset before or after liturgies as directed.
- Care for assigned sanctuary items with reverence and attention.
- Report needs, missing supplies, or maintenance concerns to the clergy or coordinator.
- Serve quietly and respectfully, remembering the holiness of the space.
Who Can Help
This service is for volunteer deacons who are able to follow the weekly rotation and serve under the direction of the clergy or designated coordinator. Younger deacons should serve with appropriate supervision and instruction.
Weekly Rhythm
The work is done weekly so the sanctuary remains consistently prepared for the Divine Liturgy, weekday services, feast days, and special prayers. The schedule may adjust around major seasons, additional liturgies, or special church events.
Getting Involved
Volunteer deacons who would like to help should contact the church or speak with the clergy or deacon servants coordinating the sanctuary rotation.
